Benefits of Kindness

When it comes to our day-to-day lives, we’re mostly focused on success and getting things done. We equate our elevating our status as the key to happiness. Most of us don’t put effort into contributing more to the community. We become kind when it is more convenient for us. We only give something when we’re asked. We do the bare minimum and become indifferent to how other people treat us.

Why is it important to be kind?

Did you know that giving does not only satisfy the donee or recipient but ourselves and the community as a whole? Listed below are the seven benefits of kindness and giving or volunteering and why we should contribute more often. How can we develop the skills of kindness and generosity to make them our habits?

Giving Makes You Feel Good and Happier

When you do good, you feel good! Research shows that people who do acts of kindness have higher levels of serotonin and dopamine. These neurotransmitters or chemicals in the brain give us a feeling of satisfaction. Little acts of kindness can positively affect our brains and improve our mood.

People who do volunteer work and share their blessings with other people tend to have better life adjustments. They see life as more meaningful. They seem to be happy overall.

Kindness Promotes Deeper Healthy Relationships

We can learn to balance any relationship if we don’t focus on taking something out of it only. You will feel more connected to people when you show kindness. Who wants to be with a grumpy and selfish type of person? Simply put, people like to be in the company of kinder ones. It’s easier to interact with and resolve conflicts and arguments. It creates a strong bond.

Improves Mental and Physical Health

People who are kind and altruistic experience less stress and anxiety. They have increased self-esteem and are always hopeful to surpass any challenge that life throws at them. When you act out of pure love and generosity, it’s almost impossible to feel stressed about it. Stinginess even increases your stress levels because you can’t stop worrying.

The physical benefits of kindness are as follows:

  • Good for the heart
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Helps live longer
  • Prevent illness
  • Helps manage chronic pain

Boosts the Value of Reciprocity

Every action has an equal opposite reaction as stated in physics. Whatever it is that we put out, we also get it back in return. It may come in different shapes or forms but we can always expect that the kindness we manifest shall also be received in the future. Understand that the value of reciprocity makes it difficult not to give back to the people who were kind to us.

Although this is the case, we shouldn’t just give because we always expect something in return. Expecting will only lead to frustration. The initial act of giving with tons of expectations becomes manipulative in nature. Nothing good comes out of it.

Discover Your Purpose

You can give meaning and purpose to your life when you create something of value. When you focus on contributing to your community, you realize that your life on earth has a purpose. When it becomes difficult to find your purpose or goal in life, perhaps you can create one. You can use the resources you have and share them for a meaningful cause. Consider something that gives back to the community.

Provide Solution to Problems

Kindness is a very simple yet effective solution to many problems. It doesn’t hurt to be kind. You can’t control people’s reactions to certain events. But you can control how you can act around them. When faced with so many adversities, you can handle situations with ease when armed with poise and kindness.

If you did your part in helping solve a problem with the best interest, know that it’s a two-way street and it’s up to them to do their part. Remember that when things are left unresolved, the most important thing is you didn’t make it worse.

Grow and Learn as a Person

When you contribute and give back to the community, you can grow as a valuable individual. You tend to step out of your comfort zone and find simple pleasures in wanting to give and servicing others.

It’s a hard thing to be kind and choose to forgive when it’s easier to be mean and angry in difficult situations. That’s why when you focus on kindness, you learn to be a better person. You become more forgiving and your character greatly improves.

Make the best out of every relationship we have now. Don’t live with regrets thinking I should have done more or I should have helped and contributed more to my community. There are so many benefits you can get from being kind and generous and it’s worth it. Make it a part of your personal growth and development.
